Jan 2018 Trip to Daily Bread Life in Tanzania

“This was my third time visiting the children’s home. Every time is special just like the first time. It is awesome to go back and see all of the kids and watch them grow as the years pass. Some of the ones that were there on my first trip are now graduating from college and starting to look for a career. There were a lot of new kids as well, it was awesome getting to know them too. You don’t realize how blessed you are here in the States until you visit a country that has real poverty and problems. No matter how little we think we have here when you go somewhere like that you realize just how well off you are. They have so little but they have pure happiness and contentment. My favorite part of the trip was when a lot of the kids remembered me from previous trips. They would come up and hug me as if I were a family member. I always get something special out of visiting and spending time with everyone at Daily Bread. I appreciate Neema and Mpeli opening their home to us graciously as always. I look forward to returning many more times.”

Mission Day with NewSpring Church Production Team

A message from Chris Balodis on how he utilized Eastern’s Mission Day Program:

For 4 days in August, I utilized some mission time, and worked alongside the production team at NewSpring Church, in the TD Convention Center, to help take on the task of a complete set change. If you have ever attended a service at NewSpring Church, you know there is nothing traditional about it.

On Sunday after the 6pm service ended, we began the task of dismantling the existing set. By 10pm that night, all that remained of the old set was the stage. Monday morning, we began rebuilding and creating what was a mere pencil sketch on a piece of paper.  After a 12-hour day, we had made good progress, but still had much to do. Tuesday was another 12-hour day consisting of a lot of rigging and time in a scissor lift, or a man lift, up near the ceiling. This does not bode well with me since I am afraid of heights; however, I persevered and got the job done.

Final stretch came on Wednesday as we incorporated more LED lights on cable wires and added some final touches to the stage before FUSE (student ministries) started that evening. This experience has given me an appreciation for the production team and what they give to the people who attend a service, and to make it a memorable one. I have since taken my next step and became a part of the church by serving with the production team. I am now very much a part of providing that very experience every Sunday from behind the scenes.

TruTorq Actuator

Trutorq ActuatorTruTorq actuators are designed to combine the perfect balance of power; durability and safety, in a compact and lightweight form. The result is a complete range of pneumatic quarter turn actuators for accurate control of valves, in a wide range of applications. The basic design is of double rack & pinion. Unique features of the Trutorq actuator are:

  • Twin Guide Bars: Unique twin guide bars absorbs adverse side loading from rack at the start of each stroke and maintains even engagement between rack & pinion for smooth operation.
  • Piston Wear Pads: The dual encapsulated wear pads absorb the adverse side loading at the start of each stroke. The 4 wear pads also ensure no metal to metal contact thus providing low friction travel.
  • Triple Shaft Bearings: Eliminates metal to metal contact and absorbs the impact load on the stop cam drive mechanism.
  • Back Up Bearing: Increases life span of the piston “O” seal and improves (reduces) friction travel.
  • Driveshaft & Cam: The shaft and adjustment cam are machined from solid bar material. The cam mechanism allows for 2.5 degree overtravel in both directions. The depth of the drive shaft allows for direct mount of any valve.
  • Body Adaptor Kit and Stop Adjustments: Recessed into the actuator main body is the body adapter kit (B.A.K.) is drilled in accordance to ISO standards. This allows the actuator to be interchangeable with a wide range of valves for direct mounting using an interchangeable sleeve. The B.A.K is also fitted with our open and closed dual stop end adjustment and locking screws. This is external to actuator pressure and a great safety feature.
  • Springs: Unique patented spring design located inside piston rack. Spring return units utilize the same end covers as the double acting actuators.

The actuator body comes in a black powder coated anodized aluminum for standard applications plus a patented CNI (Chemically Nickel Impregnated) protected finish for corrosive applications.

Safety is No Accident

Eastern has instituted a workplace safety program called Safety is No Accident. Our management works hard to ensure proper training for each individual. Safety videos as well as frequent safety meetings keep safety at the forefront of thought for our Associates. Workplace safety is about preventing injury and illness to Associates in the workplace. Therefore, it’s about protecting the Eastern’s most valuable asset: our Associates. By protecting the Associates’ well-being, Eastern also reduces the amount of money paid out in health insurance benefits, workers’ compensation benefits, and the cost of wages for temporary help. Also factor in saving the cost of lost-work hours (days away from work or restricted hours or job transfer), time spent in orienting temporary help, and the programs and services that may suffer due to fewer Associates, stress on those Associates who are picking up the absent workers’ share or, worse case, having to suspend or shut down a program due to lack of personnel.

Wellness Works

Wellness Works is an initiative proposed by one of our associates at Eastern. Wellness Works is an all encompassing program that focuses on the mental and physical needs of our Associates. Maintaining good health is a win/win situation for the employee and employer. A healthy employee is more energetic and focused while at work. Initiating Wellness Works within your own company can result in fewer sick days utilized as well as the potential of health care costs decreasing over time.

Here at Eastern there are several ways in which wellness is highlighted. Healthy recipes or tips regarding wellness are posted regularly in our internal newsletter as well as on our intranet. Keeping the idea of wellness at the forefront of thought for our employees is so important in helping them make the choice for themselves. Some aspects of the program include:

  • Healthy options available in the break room such as fruit, granola bars, yogurt, and oatmeal.
  • Lunch and Laugh program available once a month for associates who want to gather during their lunch hour and watch The Andy Griffith Show or I Love Lucy.
  • Associates are encouraged to form groups and walk on lunch break once a week or more.

The sky is the limit with the depth in which this program can soar. Depending on availability of funds and involvement there are several other aspects that could be included in your program such as monetary rewards for losing weight or programs to help smokers quit that habit. At a recent Associate Appreciation Day, Eastern gave everyone a water bottle, pedometer, and pamphlet on the benefits of walking. For more information, please contact
